The YAT Latest
The 2008 Florida legislature gave pro-choice activists quite a challenge. But with the help of activists across the state, we were able to stay strong and defeat ALL anti-choice legislation and pass proactive legislation out of committee with bi-partisan support! Click here to see how your elected officials voted!
Four Years Ago and Still Going Strong On Sunday, April 25th, The Young Activist Team, along with 1.15 million Americans, came to Washington, DC for the largest and most diverse pro-choice demonstration in history. Feeling a new urgency to show support for women's health, access to contraception, sex education, and global family planning, participants converged on the National Mall, to protest the president's policies that were negatively affecting women. This was the largest march in US History. Other participating organizations included Planned Parenthood, National Organization for Women NARAL Pro-Choice America, the Feminist Majority, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Black Women's Health Imperative.
Since then we have had great successes. In 2006, the FDA approved over-the-counter status for Plan B emergency contraception (EC) for women 18 and older, after a series of delays that elicited national outrage. In that same year, pro-choice activists worked to defeat abortions bans in nine states. One such campaign that made national news was in the battleground state of South Dakota where pro-choice groups successfully defeated an attempt to ban abortion! But with these victories, we still have work ahead of us. On April 18, 2007, the newly ultraconservative Supreme Court overturned the lower court rulings and upheld the federal abortion ban that President Bush signed into law in 2003. The decision retreated from more than 30 years of precedent that said women's health must be the paramount concern in laws that restrict abortion access. And at this very moment, in our own state of Florida, we are working to protect our right to access birth control and decide when and if to become parents.
We hope this inspires you to get involved with the Young Activist Team to make sure your elected officials represent your values! You don't have to go all the way to DC to make a difference- you can change the world in your own backyard right here in South Florida. Please contact us to get involved with the Young Activist Team - to join the Steering Committee, plan fun summer events, or just to volunteer!
